About the Author: Vaikom Muhammad Basheer
Vaikom Muhammad Basheer was born on January 20, 1908, in a small village in Vaikom, Kerala. He was the eldest of six children of a prosperous timber merchant and his wife. He attended a primary Malayalam school in his village and later an English school in Vaikom. He also learned Arabic from a Muslim tutor at home.
Basheer was influenced by the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi and ran away from home to join the Salt Satyagraha on the Calicut beaches in 1930. He was arrested and sent to the Cannanore Central Jail, where he endured torture and hardship. He later became a revolutionary inspired by Bhagat Singh and went underground to evade arrest. He traveled all over India and abroad, taking up various disguises and odd jobs. He also started a weekly magazine called Pauranadam, which was banned by the government for criticizing the Dewan of Travancore.
Basheer began writing stories while he was in prison, often on request from his fellow inmates who were bored of reading the Ramayana and the Bible. He wrote in simple and colloquial Malayalam, using humor, irony, and sarcasm to expose the absurdities and injustices of society. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern Malayalam literature and one of the finest satirists in Indian literature. Some of his famous works include Balyakalasakhi (Childhood Companion), Pathummayude Aadu (Pathumma's Goat), Mathilukal (Walls), and Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu (My Grandad Had an Elephant).
The Story: The World Renowned Nose
The World Renowned Nose was published as Vishvavikhyat Mookken in 1954 in an anthology by the same name. It is a characteristically satiric tale that is marked by humor as well as pathos. In this tale, Basheer tells us about Mookken, a simple man who experiences both the zenith and the nadir of his fortunes all because of his extraordinary nose.
Mookken is a poor man who lives with his mother in a hut. When he is twenty-four years old, his nose begins to grow longer and longer until it reaches his knees. His mother is worried that no one will marry him because of his nose, but Mookken does not care. He says that his nose is a gift from God and that he is happy with it.
One day, a reporter from a newspaper comes to interview Mookken about his nose. He asks him some silly questions and takes his photograph. The next day, Mookken's picture appears on the front page of the newspaper with the headline \"The World Renowned Nose\". Soon, Mookken becomes famous and people from all over the country come to see him and his nose. He starts charging money for showing his nose and becomes rich.
Mookken also gets offers from film producers who want to cast him as a hero or a villain in their movies. He accepts some of them and becomes an actor. He also gets 29c81ba772
